After a rough start, Porkchop heals and helps others do the same

Porkchop’s sunny disposition got him through a rough beginning and lead him to his forever family. Now, his warmth and kindness is helping others to heal.

Porkchop arrived at the city shelter in 2018. He was covered in matted hair and suffering from a severe leg injury that required amputation after he was rescued by PAWS. His cheerful and trusting personality shined throughout his recovery, and quickly caught the eye of the Schmalz family.

They were seeking a companion for their anxious pup Maggie, and Porkchop clicked from day one. “It really felt like hitting the adoption jackpot,” wrote adopter Lauren. Not only has Porkchop been a tremendous help to his sister, he’s also become an integral member of the family.

Porkchop has enjoyed family vacations, trips to the beach, chasing squirrels on hikes, and even his first Mutt Strut (dressed as a pirate, of course)!

This spring, Porkchop also found time to become a certified therapy dog! Now, his happy-go-lucky personality brightens the day of residents and patients alike at Drexel’s cancer clinic. “He’s made such a positive impact. We’re so happy to have him in our family!”

Rescued pets like Porkchop touch so many lives every day. Find a new family member and start a story of your own at phillypaws.org/adopt.
