Partnership with Dogs Trust USA will Keep Families Together!

We are thrilled to announce that PAWS has received support from Dogs Trust USA to prevent dogs from being surrendered to shelters and keep families whole. Dogs Trust USA is the local affiliate organization of Dogs Trust, the UK’s leading dog welfare charity, founded over 127 years ago. Throughout 2022, their generous $25,000 grant enables PAWS to provide free or low-cost vet care to hundreds of low-income dog owners who could not otherwise afford or access it.

The value of protecting the precious bond between people and their pets is well-documented, not just for the pet, but also for the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of their families. Preventing shelter surrenders is vital to our efforts to make Philadelphia a no-kill city, and also to the health of our community. Especially at a time when low-income residents are being disproportionately affected by the ongoing pandemic, Dogs Trust USA and PAWS are determined to preserve the lifeline that pet companionship provides.

Eva is one of the dogs who has already benefited from this partnership. Eva’s owner attended a pet food pantry hosted by PAWS and received enough food to feed Eva and her two siblings for the rest of the month. As we got to know him, we learned he was concerned about Eva’s health – lumps had been growing in her mammary glands. He had taken Eva to an emergency veterinary hospital when he first noticed them, but felt discouraged by a language barrier and overwhelmed by the financial cost of the visit and the recommended surgery. He was grateful to hear that a PAWS veterinarian could see Eva, thanks to funding from Dogs Trust USA. Eva’s initial exam at PAWS was fruitful and we made a plan with the owner to move forward with surgery to fix an inguinal hernia, remove her mammary masses, and spay her in one procedure. The surgery was successful and after results from the biopsy came back, we were all able to celebrate that Eva’s masses were benign! Thanks to Dogs Trust USA, Eva will have many more happy and healthy years in her loving home.
