PAWS Announces ‘Match Madness’ Adoption Promotion

This March, excitement isn’t just for the basketball court—there’s an adoptable pet waiting to be your MVP! PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society) is excited to announce Match Madness, an adoption promotion running from Saturday, March 14 through Monday, April 6. PAWS’ shelters are full, and with so many pets waiting for a home, adopters can name their own adoption fee and bring home a cat or dog who is ready to become their ultimate teammate. Even better, every adoption opens space for PAWS to rescue another pet in need. There’s a match out there for everyone—are you ready to score a new furry family member?

PAWS saves thousands of at-risk pets each year who have nowhere else to go. During Match Madness, adopters can name their fee for participating cats and dogs — those with longer stays or special needs, such as manageable age-related conditions, daily medication routines, or preferences for being the only pet. These animals are looking for the loving homes they deserve, and they have so much to give in return. Match Madness aims to celebrate these cats and dogs, match them with the right adopters, and create space for more animals who are waiting for the same chance.

Dogs like Johnny Cash (pictured above) are waiting for their perfect match. At 2.5 years old, Johnny is a resilient pup who has made incredible progress in foster care after overcoming multiple injuries. Once scared and shut down, he has blossomed into a playful, affectionate companion who loves snacking on treats and earning praise from his people. Johnny is looking for a calm, patient home where he can continue to build confidence and be loved for the gentle, loyal dog he has become. With the right family by his side, Johnny is ready to keep growing and thriving every step of the way.

While many PAWS pets are currently in foster care, adopters will have the opportunity to meet some participating pets in person at PetSmart at Broad & Washington (1415 Washington Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19147) on Saturday, March 28, from 12 to 2pm as part of PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week. Attendees can meet participating cats and dogs and are encouraged to submit an adoption questionnaire ahead of time to help expedite the adoption process.

Cats like Applesauce (pictured above) are also ready to find their match. At 14 years old, Applesauce came to PAWS after her beloved owner passed away. While small in stature, she has a big personality. This petite powerhouse carries herself with total confidence and isn’t shy about keeping the household in line. In her foster home, Applesauce currently lives with kittens and a medium-sized dog and has done well with both. She may do best in a home with older children or adults and could adjust to other pets with slow introductions, but she would also be perfectly happy as the only cat in the home. Applesauce does have a skin allergy and is thriving on special food and medication that keep her comfortable and glowing. For anyone seeking a confident, affectionate companion with plenty of personality, Applesauce is ready to be the star of one lucky home.

“The most successful adoptions happen when the right pet meets the right family,” says Tammy Miller, PAWS’ Senior Adoption and Foster Manager. “During Match Madness, we’re shining a spotlight on wonderful pets who are ready for their next chapter. Our team works closely with adopters to ensure each match fits the pet’s needs and the family’s lifestyle, so those relationships can thrive for years to come.”

Alongside rescue and adoption efforts, PAWS supports pet owners through vital programs such as affordable veterinary care at its two clinics, a pet food pantry, behavioral and training resources, and a safety net foster program that provides temporary housing for pets while their owners navigate periods of transition. These services help keep pets healthy, families together, and more animals out of the shelter system.

PAWS has long specialized in great matchmaking, ensuring a good fit for humans and pets alike, and offers support, guidance, and training for adopters as they welcome a new pet into their lives.
