Lefty’s lucky match

Sometimes, the right match doesn’t just change one life, it changes…well, everything!

Back in 2018, Natalie was a PAWS volunteer and experienced cat foster preparing to bring home her third foster cat. That same evening, she was also heading out on a first date. As the night came to a close, she mentioned she needed to stop by PAWS’ Old City Adoption Center to pick up her foster. Instead of calling it a night, her date, Bill, offered to drive her. Natalie never would have guessed that evening that what started as a simple detour quickly became something much more.

The two brought home Lefty, a shy, three-legged tabby who had already been adopted and returned twice. She was withdrawn and clearly struggling after so much recent change. After getting her settled into her new space, Bill stayed to spend time with her. For over an hour, he sat quietly, gently engaging with Lefty and patiently earning her trust. It did not take long for her to start coming out of her shell, and for Natalie to see a different side of Bill, too.

In the weeks that followed, Lefty began to blossom. In a safe, loving environment, Lefty’s playful and quirky personality emerged. It became clear that she had finally found where she was meant to be. Not long after, Lefty became Natalie’s first official “foster fail” and her third PAWS adoption. But as it turns out, Lefty was not the only one who found her perfect match.

What began as a first date drop-off turned into a lasting relationship. Natalie and Bill built a life together which shared a deep love for animals. Five years later, they welcomed their beautiful daughter, Josephine, into the family. Josephine is now a lively toddler and growing up surrounded by the animals who helped shape her family’s story. Alongside Lefty are two other PAWS rescues, Simcoe and Zane, who round out a busy, love-filled home. While the cats may not always appreciate a toddler’s enthusiasm, Lefty and Bill remain especially close, their bond unchanged from that very first night.

Lefty’s journey from a cat who had been returned multiple times to a beloved member of a growing family is a powerful reminder of what can happen when animals are given the patience and love they deserve. Sometimes, those second chances do not just transform an animal’s life, they bring people together in unexpected and lasting ways. At PAWS, stories like Lefty’s are why fostering matters. Opening your home, even temporarily, can change the course of an animal’s life…and maybe your own, too.
