Johnny Cash: adopted and adored!

In case you missed it: after 645 days in our care, Johnny Cash has a family to call his own! When this special pup arrived at PAWS, it was clear he needed to heal in more ways than one. He’d suffered traumatic injuries from another dog and was incredibly shut down and withdrawn. While his wounds required immediate care, we knew Johnny would also need time, patience, and a whole lot of love to truly thrive.

Our medical team immediately focused on cleaning and stitching Johnny’s injuries, and once he was stable, he was matched with foster mom Maddie, who would go on to provide extraordinary love, patience, and support throughout his journey.

Slowly but surely, Johnny began taking brave steps forward: feeling comfortable enough to relax, seeking out affection, enjoying toys, and learning to trust and seek comfort from his humans. He especially blossomed during visits to see Maddie’s parents in the quiet suburbs, forming a special bond with their pup that told us a canine friend was at the top of Johnny’s wishlist for his future home!

Johnny’s search for a family lasted nearly two years, but when the right people finally came along, it was clear that every day of waiting had led him exactly where he belonged.

Janell and Jake are longtime PAWS supporters (and close family to our lifesaving manager, Tammy!), and had been following Johnny’s journey from the beginning. “I fell in love with his face right off the bat,” shared Janell. Unfortunately, they were in the process of losing one of their older pups, and had just welcomed home a senior whose health was also very fragile. Still, there was something about Johnny they couldn’t forget.

When Janell learned Johnny was in need of a foster sitter a few months later, she was excited for the opportunity to help — and to see how Johnny fit into the family. They’d said goodbye to their second senior pup recently, and as as Janell put it, “sometimes a broken heart is helped by a new soul to love.” With two other dogs at home and Johnny’s sensitive disposition, they’d expected a a lengthy adjustment period — but after waiting so long for the right home, Johnny seemed to know he’d finally found it. “He just fit into our home seamlessly, completely harmoniously.”

What began as a temporary foster arrangement quickly became something much more. It didn’t take long for Janell and Jake to realize they couldn’t imagine life without him.

“He has been ours ever since. Seeing him fall into a routine, come out of his shell and show off his ridiculous personality has been the absolute best. He is a professional napper, begrudgingly takes walks with me, loves running around like a maniac, can often be found happily squeaking one of his hundreds of toys and let me tell you… no snack is eaten alone in this house. To say he is a joy is an understatement. He is so loved and so cherished. We are so grateful for PAWS, Maddie, and everyone who got him to home.”

The same sensitive pup who once found the world overwhelming is now safe and settled — a happy ending made possible because so many people believed he was worth it.
