On Saturday, May 18, dogs and dog lovers from across the region converged on Friends of Schuylkill River Dog Park in Center City for a Doggie Ball and Silent Auction hosted by Councilman Johnson and his wife, Dawn Chavous, to raise awareness and funding for PAWS.
At the Doggie Ball, owners paid $20 for their pets to play, pose for pictures, splash in wading pools, run an agility course, eat treats, compete for prizes, and take portraits with Councilman Johnson. The very successful silent auction included prizes donated by more than a dozen businesses, including PetSmart, Walk It Like a Dog and Philly Pet Hotel & Villa.
Councilman Johnson presented a $2,500 check to PAWS board member Michele DiVeterano and Community Outreach Coordinator Allison Lamond on behalf of City Council. He said, “We thought the Doggie Ball would be a great opportunity to bring together dog owners and support PAWS.”
Melissa Levy, PAWS’ Executive Director, welcomed the support.
“We are so grateful to Councilman Johnson and his wife, Dawn Chavous, for their hard work to make the Doggie Ball a success,” she said. “Funds raised from the event will enable PAWS to rescue and find loving families for more homeless dogs and cats who have nowhere else to go. The Doggie Ball is a great example of how city leaders and animal lovers can come together to make a real difference for Philadelphia’s homeless pets.”
The Doggie Ball was sponsored by Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, Chavous Consulting Inc., Opportunity Barks, Dranoff Properties and Beverage Association of Philadelphia.
