PAWS Rescues 263 Animals in January
January was the start of a new chapter for PAWS, which is now an independent rescue organization dedicated to saving the most vulnerable animals in the city’s animal control shelter. We are very proud to report that it was a month brimming with happy endings:
- We took in 263 homeless, abandoned, and unwanted dogs and cats whose only chance at life was adoption or foster care.
- We found loving adoptive homes for 186 animals (16 dogs and 170 cats).
- We placed 71 animals (16 dogs and 55 cats) into temporary foster homes.
We continue to adopt-out animals seven days a week at our adoption center (2nd & Arch Streets) and off-site adoption locations (three area PETsMART and PETCO stores).
Among the lucky ones in January were:
Magoo (right), who had spent several weeks in the shelter and was ultimately labeled unadoptable, but who found a wonderful home after only a short time at PAWS adoption center. Total time in shelter/adoption center: 43 days.
Peanut (below), who was dropped off at the shelter by his owner who no longer wanted him. He was transferred to PAWS adoption center and found a home two days later! Total time in shelter/adoption center: 5 days.
PAWS will continue to expand its ability to save lives, and is committed to making Philadelphia a city in which every healthy and treatable pet is guaranteed a home. But we cannot do it alone! PAWS’ lifesaving efforts depend entirely on the generosity and participation of the community. Specifically, our ability to rescue animals from the shelter and give them a chance at life is only as great as the number of foster homes ready to provide temporary care for them. By opening your home for as little as a few weeks, you can help us give these animals a second chance. Fostering is one of the most rewarding experiences imaginable.
